Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy in mTBI/PPCS Study 2014

[stm_post_details]

Traumatic Brain Injury / Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

Dr. Paul Harch, LSUHSC Clinical Professor of Medicine, is the principal investigator on a randomized prospective trial to determine the effectiveness of 40 hyperbaric oxygen treatments on symptoms and cognitive function in adults with the persistent post-concussion syndrome of mild traumatic brain injury.

The study is fully funded by the United States government and grew out of previous experience treating military veterans and civilians who had sustained traumatic brain injury with hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

IF YOU CONTINUE TO HAVE SYMPTOMS FROM A MILD CONCUSSION YOU EXPERIENCED WHILE PLAYING SPORTS, IN A CAR ACCIDENT, OR DURING MILITARY SERVICE, YOU MAY QUALIFY.

Fifty participants will be recruited who have had persistent symptoms from a traumatic brain injury six months to 10 years before. The participants will undergo oral, written, and computer tests before and after eight weeks of hyperbaric treatment. All participants will receive hyperbaric oxygen, however, half of the subjects will have a no-treatment eight-week control period before receiving the full course of hyperbaric treatment.
